About the LITHOPROBE Seismic Processing Facility

The LITHOPROBE Seismic Processing Facility (LSPF) is the national data archive centre for all deep crustal reflection and refraction seismic data acquired under the Canadian National Geoscience Project, LITHOPROBE. This facility is located at the University of Calgary within the Department of Geology and Geophysics. LITHOPROBE researchers are located at Universities throughout Canada, and in government laboratories of the Geological Survey of Canada.

As a data archive centre, the LSPF has deep crustal seismic data from different LITHOPROBE transects. Each transect transcends geological provinces of great tectonic interest.

Most of the data is in the public domain. The rest will have to go through the moratorium period of two years before they will become public as well.

To find what you need, check the archive and publication list, a tree leading to tapes, maps, sections, and publications including online newsletters. Other sites providing information on LITHOPROBE activities are listed in the home page.

Concerning the data that is available at the LSPF, please check here to find out how to order LITHOPROBE data.

Besides storing and copying data, the LSPF trains scientists in the LITHOPROBE seismic community at regular intervals to use the SUN/INSIGHT seismic processing software. INSIGHT software questions and updates are handled through this central site. LITHOPROBE sites that use the SUN/INSIGHT software exchange ideas and questions/answers with regard to the software for deep crustal seismic data processing. The healthy climate this has been created over the years has translated into publications, new software and research reports. The LSPF publishes its semi-annual NEWSLETTER which not only deals with the operational aspects of the LSPF but also reports on the research work that is being carried out at different sites. Readers are encouraged to look at the LITHOPROBE and LSPF publication lists.

Arie van der Velden at the LSPF has released the initial version of the LITHOPROBE Seismic Atlas, an online document containing processed and interpreted seismic sections, comments and references. This atlas is being updated as new processed and interpolated material becomes ready for display.

Elissa Lynn, Digital Data Manager of SNORCLE (Slave - NORthern Cordillera Lithospheric Evolution) transect, is developing the SNORCLE web page at the LSPF.
